केशी असुराचा संहार करणारा म्हणून तो केशव. तसेच सुंदर, तेजस्वी केशांनी सुशोभित असा हा अर्थही मान्य आहे. ब्रह्मा, विष्णू, महेश या शक्तींचे एकत्र अधिष्ठान म्हणूनही हे नाव गौरविले जाते.
