**Upaniṣadic connection<br> The Taittirīya Upaniṣad's ‘Ānandavallī’ (2.7) describes Brahman as ‘ānanda’ (bliss) — the source and substance of all joy. ‘Śarma’ and ‘ānanda’ are near-synonyms, both pointing to the bliss-nature of the Absolute. The teaching of the Upaniṣad is that the bliss experienced by humans is a tiny fraction of the infinite bliss that is Brahman (Viṣṇu as Śarma). The progressive scale of bliss described in the Taittirīya — from the joy of a young human to the joy of Brahmā — culminates in the infinite bliss of Brahman, which is Viṣṇu as Śarma.
