This name conveys Viṣṇu as the ultimate vehicle of liberation — the supreme means (‘upāya’) by which the soul ascends from the bondage of saṃsāra to the freedom of mokṣa. In the Śrī Vaiṣṇava tradition, the Lord Himself is the ‘upāya’ (means) and the ‘upeya’ (goal): surrendering to Him is both the path and the destination. As Varārohaḥ, Viṣṇu is the mount on which the soul rides to its liberation.
