**Significance<br> ‘Tapas’ means both "heat" (the heat of ascetic practice that burns away impurity) and "spiritual brilliance" (the luminosity that results from purification). Viṣṇu as Mahātapāḥ is the source and supreme exemplar of all tapas. Before creation, the Lord performs the primordial tapas — the primal act of creative concentration — from which the universe emerges. The Taittirīya Upaniṣad (2.6): ‘"Sa tapo'tapyata"‘ — "He performed tapas" — this is Brahman's (Viṣṇu's) act of concentrated creative will that brings forth the cosmos.
