Polymeric Air-Release & Defoamer

FOAMSTAB 520

FOAMSTAB 520 is a high-performance, silicone-free polymeric defoamer and air-release additive specifically engineered for solvent-borne and solvent-free systems. It provides exceptional foam destruction during mixing and prevents microfoam entrapment in high-build PU, epoxy, and heavy-duty industrial coatings without causing surface defects or intercoat adhesion issues.

Key Performance Benefits

  • Complete Defoaming & Air Release
Eliminates both macro-foam created during high-speed dispersion and microfoam trapped during application.
  • Silicone-Free Assurance
Zero risk of cratering, fisheyes, or surface contamination, making it ideal for high-gloss recoatable finishes.
  • Optimal Intercoat Adhesion
Maintains excellent adhesion between primer and topcoat layers in multi-layer coating systems.
  • High-Build Efficiency
Prevents air entrapment in thick epoxy flooring and high-solids polyurethane coatings.

Recommended Applications

  • Polyurethane (PU) Systems
2K solvent-borne and 100% solids PU industrial flooring and coating systems.
  • Epoxy Formulations
Self-leveling epoxy flooring, protective coatings and high-solids primers.
  • Industrial Coatings
Protective coatings, coil coatings, wood finishes and machinery lacquers.
  • Solvent-Free Binders
High-build casting resins and structural adhesive systems.

Typical Physical Properties

Property Parameter Test Specification / Unit
Chemical Description Solvent-free polymeric defoamer

Solubility Insoluble in water; soluble in organic solvents

Dosage & Processing Guidelines

The recommended dosage rate is 0.1% to 0.8% calculated on the total weight of the formulation.

  • Grinding Stage
Add 50–70% of the calculated dosage prior to pigment grinding or dispersion for optimum foam control.
  • Let-Down Stage
Incorporate the remaining dosage into the resin matrix under sufficient shear to ensure uniform distribution.
  • Pre-Testing
Due to formulation-specific compatibility, ladder testing is recommended to determine the optimum dosage level.

💡 Formulator Insight & Lab Tip
When replacing BYK 054 / 054T in high-clearance epoxy flooring or clear PU topcoats, FOAMSTAB 520 provides matching air-release speed without affecting film clarity or inducing haziness. For thick casting applications (>2mm thickness), split incorporation (50% in Part A resin during grind, 50% during final blending) yields optimal degassing performance.
